5 Ways to Connect With Yourself on a Deeper Level

If you sat quietly in a room by yourself, without any outside distractions – no cell phone buzzing or a book to read – would you enjoy your own company? For many of us, the thought of sitting still with our own thoughts is uncomfortable, maybe even scary.

Why is this? The person we spend the most time with is ourselves. Shouldn’t we enjoy our own company? The truth is, many people haven’t actually spent enough time alone to even know who they are. We are surrounded by outside influences, some very obvious and others more subtle. Our friends and each social media page we look at influence our decisions and thoughts.

The most important relationship we have should be the one we have with ourselves.

By really connecting with our authentic self, we break down barriers that hold us back from being the best version of us. Knowing yourself also makes finding your purpose much easier, which will make you and all the people who surround you much happier. When you know yourself intimately, you can live your best life aligned with your values.

Here are 5 ways to connect with yourself on a deeper level:

1. Disconnect.
Take some time and unplug from the world. Use this time to find activities you enjoy solo. Some great things to try are painting, coloring, writing, dancing, etc

2. Take yourself on a date.
Get all dressed up and go to your favorite restaurant. Have yourself a beautiful dinner. Try to limit using your cell phone and simply enjoy your own company.

3. Get outside.
In nature is where I find myself connecting to my soul the most. Go to a beach sit and listen to the waves. Find a nice trail through the woods and go for a stroll. Bring a good book and enjoy yourself.

I’m currently reading Think Like a Monk by Jay Shetty and finding it very inspirational!

4. Be grateful.
Every day, find 5 things to be grateful for. Make a daily list in your journal. Expressing gratitude makes you reflect on the things in life that make you happy and feel good.

5. Connect with your breath.
Take time each day to focus on breathing. It’s a simple way to calm your mind and find a moment of inner peace. Try inhaling through your nose for a count of 4, holding the breath for a moment, and releasing your breath through your mouth

Most importantly, love yourself. You are awesome.
